ATLAS OF LATE ANTIQUE CITIES IN THE SOUTH OF THE IBERIAN PENINSULA AND NORTHERN AFRICA (IIIrd-VIIIth CENTURY)

The research that has been conducted during the last 30 years has profoundly changed our perception of the cities in the Iberian peninsula and Northern Africa during late antiquity: the vigour and importance of the cities as places of power seem to have continued uninterrupted between 300 and 800 AD. Military and political developments, such as the “crisis of the third century” or the Vandal invasion, seem to have had no effect on this urban reality. It is no longer decline but transformation that characterises their urbanity – just as the functions of their social elites are defined by their continuity rather than any sudden changes.

This
communis opinio is nevertheless based on a notable paucity of material evidence. Due to this reason, the ATLAS project has the objective of establishing an atlas (open access WebGIS) that contains selected cities in the provinces of Baetica (modern Andalucia) and Africa Proconsularis (modern Tunisia): two prosperous regions that – given their high degree of urbanisation – are intended to serve as paradigms. For the first time, the atlas brings together all of the information available to work on a history of the late antique cities through a micro-regional approach: other than archaeological data, this research also includes epigraphic and topographic information and the whole range of literary testimonies. The study covers the period from the third to the eighth century.
