THE CITIES OF LATE ANTIQUITY PUT TO THE TEST OF A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS

Writing the history of the cities of late antiquity is a difficult exercise. Their remains have long been neglected and their history poorly understood. Fortunately, for several decades now, renewed attention of researchers has been focused on this object of research, thanks to new readings and interpretations of the sources, as well as advancements in archaeological research. This dynamic has led to a considerable growth in evidence, which is, however, accompanied by a certain regional compartmentalisation of studies. The ANR-DFG Atlas of Ancient Cities of the Southern Iberian Peninsula and North Africa project sought to overcome this compartmentalisation of studies by systematically comparing the history of cities in two regions with similar characteristics. At the end of this project, it seemed necessary to continue this comparative approach, beyond the provinces involved in the project, towards Italy, Greece, the Balkans, Asia and the Orient. Comparisons made on the basis of case studies delimited geographically, temporally and thematically, and thus presenting a clear structural identity, make it possible to identify similarities or differences. It is precisely these similarities and differences, these unexpected peculiarities, that hold the potential for new knowledge, as they raise questions about the conditions under which they emerged, the reasons for their evolution and their ultimate determination. All questions that will help to advance the history of late antique cities.
