Knowledge of the cities of Late Antiquity has long suffered from a pair of problematic issues. On the one hand, their history was badly understood for the longest time. Thanks to the historiographical changes of the last few decades, we now know that it is not decline but transformation and even continuity that characterise the history of the late antique city. On the other hand, the remains of these cities, often made up of spolia and considered less significant and less aesthetic than those of the city of the High Empire, were neglected or even simply dismantled and cleared without being recorded. The revival of studies on Late Antiquity has now made it possible to draw attention to these late antique cities and the need to enhance their remains. Concerned with these two aspects, the ANR-DFG Atlas project proposes to deepen, on the one hand, the historical reflection on the late cities of North Africa and the Iberian Peninsula through a micro-regional approach and a comparative approach based on a rigorous inventory of archaeological, epigraphic and literary sources. It also proposes to use new forms of promotion of the heritage of late antique monuments through the use of 3D modelling.
